1The Farm Mouse and the City Mouse

Ben was a little farm mouse. Alvin was a little city mouse.
Ben stayed all day in his straw bed. When the sun went down, he went out to find little round seeds to eat. Then he went back to his straw house. Ben was happy.
One morning after a nap Ben called Alvin up and said, “come to see me.”
“I’ll be happy to come,” said Alvin.”
“I’ll learn what a farm mouse does.”
The next morning Alvin went to the farm. Ben was happy to see Alvin.
Ben picked round seeds for Alvin. He made Alvin a straw bed. But the next morning, Alvin said, “I am taking the train to the city,” said Alvin, “I don’t wish to eat any more seeds. Why don’t you come with me, Ben?”
Ben wanted to learn what living in the city was like.
He went with Alvin to the city. Alvin lived at the top of a big wide house where a woman and a pet cat lived.
“Does the pet cat chase you?” Ben asked Alvin.
The pet cat does not know I live here” said Alvin.
“We can not let them see us.”
So with much care Ben and Alvin walked along the side of a big room. They saw good things to eat. Ben picked up something to eat. Just then Alvin poked Ben.
“Here comes the woman!” said Alvin.
Ben dropped what he was eating. They ran away at once. They did not eat any of the good things they saw. After a nap Ben and Alvin went back to the room where they saw good things to eat.
Ben picked up something to eat. Just then Alvin poked Ben.
“Here comes the pet cat!” said Alvin.
Ben dropped what he was eating. They ran away. They did not eat any of the good things they saw.
“That does it” said Ben shaking. “I don’t want any more of this. In the city you have more than little round seeds to eat. But you have to run away from a woman and a pet cat! Having to do that is not any fun,”
So Ben went back to the farm. Ben was happy.

2The Ice Cream Touch

Tommy loved ice cream. He ate ice cream every day. He couldn’t bear to live without ice cream. One day. Tommy met a vanilla ice cream-colored rabbit in the woods.
“I have magic power. I can give you one wish,” said the rabbit.
“Really? May I?” Tommy was surprised. “Yes,” said the rabbit.
“ I wish everything I touch would be ice cream,” Tommy said.
“Good. This is a magic pill. After you eat it, your wish will come true,” said the rabbit.
The next morning, Tommy took the pill. He wondered what would happen next. He touched his red pillow. It became ice cream. He took a bite, he found it was delicious!
Tommy was very excited. He touched all the things in his room. Now he had an ice cream bed, an ice cream quilt, and an ice cream desk.
“The magic is real!” he shouted.
He touched his white pants and red shirts. They became ice cream! Now Tommy was a little upset. He couldn't get dressed. He started to cry. Guess what? They were ice cream tears.
Then Tommy heard a sound. It was Mimi, his pure white little cat. Mimi was Tommy’s best friend. Tommy cuddled his cat.
“Oh, no!” His best friend also became ice cream.
At that moment, the vanilla ice cream-colored rabbit showed up.
The rabbit looked at all the ice cream and asked, ”What happened? You look so sad,”
Tommy cried louder.

“Please help me. I don’t want any ice cream! I just want my cat back!”
“Well, OK,” said the rabbit,
“Now I will give you another wish. Touch things with your right hand and they will return to their original form.”
Tommy stopped crying.
He touched Mimi with his right hand. Mimi was pure white again and leaned against him.
Tommy was so happy!
Then he touched all his things. Very soon, there was no more ice cream. Now Tommy still loved ice cream. He still ate ice cream every day, but he made a wish in his heart:
“I wish I never see that vanilla ice cream-colored rabbit ever again!”

3The Lion and the Mouse

One day, a lion lay asleep in the deep jungle. A tiny mouse was running about in the tall grass. Without noticing where he was headed, the mouse ran over the lion’s head and down his nose.
The lion awoke with a loud roar, and down came his paws over the little mouse. The great beast was about to open his huge jaws to swallow the tiny creature. At that moment, he heard the cry of the frightened mouse:
“Pardon me, O my great King, I beg of you,” said the mouse.
“If you will only forgive me this time, I shall never forget your kindness. I meant no harm, and I certainly didn't want to disturb you, your Majesty. If you spare my life, perhaps I may be able to do you a good turn in the near future.”
After hearing what the mouse said, the lion began to laugh, and he laughed so hard that his stomach started to ache terribly. “How could a tiny creature like
you ever do anything to help a great creature like me?” The lion shook his
head with laughter.
“Oh, well,” he shrugged and looked down at the frightened little mouse, “You’re not so much of a good meal to me anyway.” So he took his paws off the poor little prisoner, and then the mouse ran away immediately.
Some time after this incident, there were three skillful hunters who wanted to carry a lion to their King as a birthday gift. So, they carefully chose the spot in the jungle and set up rope nets, trying to capture the lion alive. The lion, who was hunting for some food without noticing the coming danger, fell into the trap.
He angrily roared and fiercely thrashed around, trying to free himself out. But, with every move he made, the ropes bound him even tighter and tighter instead.
The desperate lion started to fear that he might never be able to escape from this trap, so he roared pitifully. His thunderous bellows echoed through the whole jungle and against the sky. The tiny mouse, who was scurrying about far
away, heard the lion’s roars.” he said to himself and remembered his promise to the lion. So he ran to see whether he could be of any help.
After discovering the sad state in which the lion was, the mouse comforted him and said, “Stop whatever you are doing now! You must not roar. If you make so much noise, the hunters will come and capture you. I’ll get you out of this trap as soon as possible.”
With his sharp little teeth, the mouse gnawed at the ropes until they broke. Seizing this great opportunity, the lion had stepped out of the net, and he was free once more. Then the mouse said, “Now, was I not right? I promised you that I would come to help you if you were in the real danger of losing your life!”
“Thank you, my good mouse,” gently said the lion.
“You did help me even though I am big, and you are so little. Now I understand that kindness is always worth while, and even the strong sometimes need the friendship of the weak!”

4The Puppy Who Wanted to Be a Cat

Life seemed far too busy for Penny the puppy. There was always something her parents wanted her to do, and she was fed up with it. So one day, Penny decided to be…a cat. “Cats can do whatever they like,” Penny said to her brother and sister. “I mean, just look at Ginger!”
Penny and her family shared the house with Ginger the cat. He did an awful lot of dozing and was never, ever, in a hurry.
“But you’re a dog,” said Penny’s brother. “You can’t be a cat.”
“Oh, can’t I?” said Penny. “We’ll soon see about that!”
From then on, Penny copied everything Ginger did. She walked like a cat, stretched out on the rug like a cat, and even tried to miaow like a cat, although that was quite hard. And when her parents told her to do something, she said, “I’m sorry, I can’t do that. I’m a cat!” As you can imagine, after a while this started to drive her parents crazy. So they came up with a plan.
The next morning there was a surprise for Penny. At breakfast, her brother’s bowl was full of lovely chunky dog food and so was her sister’s. But Penny’s contained something rather strange.
“What’s this?” asked Penny, sniffing at it.
“Well, since you’re a cat now,” said her mother, “we thought you ought to have cat food for your meals!”
Suddenly, Penny wasn’t so sure being a cat was such a good idea. How could Ginger eat this disgusting stuff? It was yuck…
The rest of the family burst out laughing at the look on Penny’s face. Penny also laughed when her father took away the bowl of cat food and produced a proper breakfast for her. And from then on Penny was a puppy again. At least she was—until she saw a bird flying through the sky.
“Don’t be absurd,” said her sister. “You can’t be a bird!”
But Penny’s parents wouldn’t put anything past her. And neither would I.

5Rose White and Rose Red

There were two beautiful sisters, Rose White and Rose Red. They lived with their mother in a little cottage on a hill near the forest.
One snowy winter night, they were inside their cottage, keeping warm by the fire. Suddenly, they heard a loud thumping knock at the front door, “Bang, bang!” Mother Rose slowly opened the door to see who was knocking. It was a bear!
“May I come in?” the bear said. “The snow outside is terrible, and I am cold.” The mother felt sorry for the bear, and soon they were all talking by the fire.
Every night that winter, the bear came to their cottage to sit by the fire and talk. They all became great friends. But when spring came, the bear had to leave.  He said, “I must go back to the forest now to protect my gold.” A few days later, Rose White and Rose Red were taking a walk in the forest. There found an elderly gnome with his beard stuck in an old fallen tree! “We will help you,” they said. And they cut his beard loose from the tree. The gnome was angry that they had cut his beard and ran away without even saying “thank you.”
The next day, the sisters were collecting berries in the forest when they saw the gnome again. They decided to follow him deep into the woods. They followed him into a cave where they saw piles of gold and jewels! Suddenly, they heard growling. “Grrrrrrr!” “Who is stealing my gold?” growled a bear from deep inside the cave. “They are!” squeaked the gnome. And he pointed to the two sisters. “No, you are!” said the bear, and he chased the gnome deep into the cave. When the bear returned, the sisters recognized him as their friends.  “Thank you,” he said and the two girls ran to the bear and hugged him.

A big poof of white smoke appeared! Where was the bear? The bear had been under the evil gnome’s spell. Now, he was a prince! The prince, Rose White and Rose Red walked back to the cottage joyfully.

1The Wizard of Oz

Dorothy went back into the house and looked for something to eat. She was hungry, and so was Toto. She ate some bread and butter and then went down to the stream for some water to drink. Then she changed into a blue-and-white dress and put a bonnet on her head. She looked at her feet. She was wearing old leather shoes. They weren’t very comfortable, so she tried on the witch’s silver shoes. They fitted her perfectly. Then she put some bread in a basket and said to Toto, “Now we’re ready for our journey to the City of Emeralds.”
She left the house and started walking. Soon she came to the yellow brick road. As she walked along, people came out of their farm houses and bowed to her. They knew she was the girl who killed the Wicked Witch of the East.
Toward evening, she came to a house that was bigger than all the others. Men and women were dancing on the grass in front of it. Five men were playing violins. There were tables full of food.
A man came up to her. “Welcome,” he said. “My name is Boq. I am a Munchkin. You are a good witch.”
“I’m not a witch,” Dorothy said. “I’m just a girl.”
“But you are wearing white,” Boq said. “Good witches wear white.”
“My dress is blue and white,” Dorothy said.
“And that is why we know you are our friend. Blue is the favorite color of the Munchkins.”
Dorothy had no answer to this, so she said, “I am very tired. May I rest here?”
“Of course,” Boq said and took her to a bedroom. Dorothy fell asleep immediately.
In the morning, Boq gave her a good breakfast and said, “How can we help you?”
“You can tell me how to get to the City of Emeralds,” Dorothy said.

2A Story of Mark Twain

Mark Twain was a famous American writer. He wrote many stories and many of them were funny stories. These stories are still read by many people all over the world. Besides writing, he also liked hunting and fishing very much, so one year he went to Maine for a holiday and spent three very pleasant weeks in the woods there.
When he had to go back home, he drove to the station with his baggage. There he asked a porter to put it into the train. Then he got into the smoking car and sat down in one of the comfortable seats there. The car was empty when he got in, but a few minutes later, another man got in and sat down on the seat opposite his. Mark Twain looked at the man and thought that this man looked quite unpleasant. However, it would be impolite to say nothing in that situation, so he said good morning to the man, and they began to talk.
Frist, they talk about the weather and then they talked about Maine. The stranger said, ”We have some beautiful woods in Maine. It would be a pity to come to Maine without spending some time there. I suppose you have been in our woods, haven’t you?”
“Yes, I have,” answered Mark Twain. “I’ve just spent three weeks there and I had a very good time, too. And let me tell you something. Although fishing isn’t allowed in Maine at this season, I’ve got two hundred pounds of beautiful fish with my baggage in this train. I like to eat fish, so I packed it in ice to take it home with me. May I ask who you are, sir?”
The stranger looked at Mark Twain for several seconds and then answered, “I’m a police officer. My job is to catch people who hunt and fish during the wrong seasons. And who are you? ” Mark Twain was surprised and frightened when he heard this. He thought quickly and then answered, “Well, I’ll tell you, sir. I’m the man who tells the biggest lies in America.”

3The Tale of the Traditional Christmas Pudding
Martha decided to move with the times and try the delights of microwave cooking. Whereupon, her devoted husband Archie went out and bought her a brand new top-of-the range Sharp Microwave oven.
Christmas approached and Martha got out her Christmas pudding recipe and assembled the ingredients. She proceeded along traditional lines and even got the each member of the family to stir the mixture ‘for luck.’ When Martha consulted the microwave’s manual for the cooking time, she could not believe that ten minutes would be enough for a traditional Christmas pudding. Consequently she decided to substitute her normal cooking time of 50 minutes.
As Martha was in the lounge watching her favorite T.V. program she did not see the pudding spitting in the microwave oven, nor did she hear the mini-explosions. When she finally extracted the pudding from the microwave after nearly an hour of cooking on 'High', it smelt of burnt sugar and looked like a ball of tar. Naturally, the Christmas pudding was a disaster, so much so, that Martha could not even prod it with a fork. In fact the black ball stuck to the bottom of the bowl and Archie had to get a screwdriver to prize it from its base.
In a fit of pique, Martha threw the shriveled Christmas pudding to Togo her St Bernard puppy. After a few days she could see the funny side, and Togo loved his new indestructible toy, which amused him until the next Christmas.

4The Fox and the Chick

One day a fat little chick wanted to go for a walk around the farm. The little chick hopped along looking at the things on the farm. Soon the chick was far from the hen house. Then the chick met a fox.
“What a fine chick you are, and so much like your father,” said the fox.
“I liked to chat with your father. It made me happy just to talk to your father and to hear your father sing. Now that he is not here, I am lost. Will you sing something for me as your father did? Please sing something. Then please come to lunch with me. Your father always came to lunch with me.”
The little chick was very happy to hear the nice words, and it really liked to sing for the fox. So with a shake of its wings, it hopped up and started singing. But then the fox picked up the fat little chick by its wing! The farm dog saw the fox catch the little chick.
“It looks like I have some work to do,” said the dog.
The dog chased after the fox. “That dog is fast,” the little chick said to the fox.
“Tell the dog I want to go with you. Then it will stop chasing us.” The fox started to tell the dog, “This chick wants to go with me.” But as the fox was talking, it let go of the little chick’s wing. The little chick ran from the fox.  Hopping back to the hen house, the chick said, “A chick who wants to live long will not sing for a fox.” The dog chased the fox all the way to the fox’s house.
Running from the dog, the fox said, “After this, I will not stop to chat when I am having my lunch!”

5Before Breakfast

“Where’s Papa going with that ax?” said Fern to her mother as they were setting the table for breakfast.
“Out to the hog house,” replied Mrs. Arable. “Some pigs were born last night.”
“I don’t see why he needs an ax,” continued Fern, who was only eight.
“Well,” said her mother, “one of the pigs is a runt. It’s very small and weak, and it will never amount to anything. So your father has decided to do away with it.”
“Do away with it?” shrieked Fern. “You mean kill it? Just because it’s smaller than the others?”
Mrs. Arable put a pitcher of cream on the table. “Don’t yell, Fern!” she said.  “Your father is right. The pig would probably die anyway.”
Fern pushed a chair out of the way and ran outdoors. The grass was wet and the earth smelled springtime. Fern’s sneakers were sopping by the time she caught up with her father.
“Please don’t kill it!” she sobbed. “It’s unfair.” Mr. Arable stopped walking.
“Fern,” he said gently, “you will have to learn to control yourself.”
“Control myself?” yelled Fern. “This is a matter of life and death, and you talk about controlling myself.” Tears ran down her cheeks and she took hold of the ax and tried to pull it out of her father’s hand.
“Fern,” said Mr. Arable, “I know more about raising a litter of pigs than you do. A weakling makes trouble. Now run along!” “But it’s unfair,” cried Fern.  “The pig couldn’t help being born small, could it? If I had been very small at birth, would you have killed me?”

Mr. Arable smiled. “Certainly not,” he said, looking down at his daughter with love. “But this is different. A little girl is one thing; a little runty pig is another.” “I see no difference,” replied Fern, still hanging on to the ax. “This is the most terrible case of injustice I ever heard of.”
